Kevin Hart - the gamble that paid off...

“That gamble was one I could live with. People frown upon gambling but you don’t know what your future will be. So sometimes a gamble is the best way to find what will become you..."

Kevin Hart’s Advice on Commitment

After receiving praise from comedy icons like Dave Chappelle, Tiffany Haddish, Jerry Seinfeld, and Chris Rock, the most recent recipient of the Mark Twain Award for American Humor, Kevin Hart, took the stage.

“You can’t buy support,” he began. “You can’t fake that.” After praising all of these people that helped his star rise, he opened up about his the incredible, singular focus mindset that helped his career, along with his faith.

My favorite part is in the final eight minutes or so. Kevin Hart said, “My mom helped me understand the value of self. I was a good kid and I could be whatever I wanted to be. I believed it.”

Then he discussed the ultimatum he gave himself. “I fell in love with the idea of comedy. I fell in love with something I could adapt to, grab onto, and keep. It’s not about the award, but the thing you committed to — I committed to comedy.”

He continues, “I committed to saying it’s this or nothing else. All my eggs are in this basket. Whether it works or not, I’m happy with my choice. My choice became so much more than I ever saw because I was able to say it’s this or nothing else.

“That gamble was one I could live with. People frown upon gambling but you don’t know what your future will be. So sometimes a gamble is the best way to find what will become you. I’ve won and I’ve lost, but there’s no bigger win than the win of choice.”

Key takeaway: Energy you put into Plan B is energy you take away from Plan A (and Arnold agrees with him).

Marketing + Habits

Kevin Hart Wants to “Shift Culture”

“I want to shift black culture.”

- Kevin Hart, Comedian

Kevin Hart wants to “shift culture.” This is a huge statement. A truly huge idea. It’s his purpose. It’s what pulls him forward, day after day, to get shit done.

It’s how he’s able to put in long hours and accomplish incredible tasks. I couldn’t begin to tell you everything he’s doing, but in a 5-minute stalker scroll online, here’s a few things I found that are on his plate:

  • Promote comedy special, Reality Check

  • Run plant-based restaurant, Hart House

  • Manage 2 media companies

  • Manage wellness company, VitaHustle

  • Host series Hart to Heart

  • Host 2 celebrity game shows

  • Promote Gran Coramino Tequila

  • Producer 11+ new films and TV shows

Kevin Hart is an absolute beast when it comes to putting in the hours and part of this is having an amazing team, an amazing work ethic, and undeniable talent. But, I would guarantee his purpose is the driving factor underneath all of this output, collaboration, and momentum.

In his interview with John Cena on Hart to Heart, Cena talks about meeting Hart for the first time, and asking the comedian why he was doing so much.

Why he was getting off a plane, conducting a business call, and getting wired for their scene…simultaneously.

His answer, in addition to the fact that he loves it, was to “shift culture.” For Hart, specifically, this is about shifting the culture for black creatives and black business owners. When you have singular vision, your marketing, habits, and focus become one.
